The minutes immediately after a road traffic collision are chaotic. Airbags may have deployed, fluids may be leaking, and one or more vehicles may be obstructing a live carriageway. Our operators are trained in scene management, not just vehicle recovery, which means their first task on arrival is always to make the area safe before any recovery equipment is set up.

A thorough risk assessment covers fuel spills, brake fluid, coolant, and, on modern hybrid or electric vehicles, the possibility of high-voltage exposure. Absorbent granules and containment booms are deployed for fluid leaks as a matter of course. Where a vehicle has sustained significant structural damage, a spectacle lift or underlift boom is used rather than a standard wheel-lift, distributing the load across the chassis rather than concentrating it at a single tow point. Winching is employed when a vehicle cannot be rolled to the recovery position, this is common after side-impact collisions that have locked the steering or jammed the brakes.

We photograph the vehicle and the scene at the start and end of every accident recovery as standard, these images form part of the documentation passed to insurers. If the vehicle is a write-off, we can move it directly to a salvage compound or an insurer-nominated storage facility. Where the road surface has been contaminated with glass, plastic, or metal debris, we carry out a sweep of the carriageway before we leave. We work alongside police and fire crews regularly and understand what they need from a recovery operator: speed, competence, and no additional hazards created in the process.
