Recovering a vehicle at two in the morning on an unlit rural road, a dark industrial estate, or an empty retail park is a fundamentally different job to the same task in daylight. Hazards that are obvious in daylight, kerb edges, drainage channels, other vehicles, uneven ground, can be invisible without the right lighting. A driver arriving at night needs to illuminate the working area properly before doing anything else, and that takes equipment: mounted scene lights on the recovery vehicle, handheld torches, and high-visibility clothing rated for low-light conditions.

The driver attending will carry out the same assessment and recovery process that would apply in daylight; the additional steps are simply about making the hazards visible first.

The greater risk at night is not mechanical, it is other road users. A broken-down vehicle on a dark road is significantly less visible to approaching drivers, particularly if its own lights have failed as part of the breakdown. Our drivers position warning triangles and use all available lighting on the recovery vehicle to maximise visibility of the scene from distance. If the situation is on a fast road and visibility is genuinely compromised, the first action is to make the casualty vehicle visible before any recovery work begins.
