Why a Van Tyre Is Not a Car Tyre
The single most important thing to understand about van tyres is the letter C. In a size such as 205/65 R16C, that C stands for commercial, and it signals a tyre built with a reinforced casing, extra plies in the sidewall, and a load index intended for the axle weights a working van actually sees. A panel van at gross vehicle weight can be carrying well over a tonne of payload on top of its own kerb weight, and that weight is not distributed like a family car. It sits behind the driver, over the rear axle, and it does not move around to balance itself out.
A passenger-car tyre in the same nominal size will bolt onto the same rim and will look, to most eyes, identical. It is not. Its load index is lower, its casing is thinner, and it is designed to operate at pressures roughly half of what a laden van requires. Run it under a loaded Transit and the sidewall flexes further than it was built to flex, the internal temperature climbs, and the failure mode is not a slow deflation. It is a tread separation or a sidewall burst, usually at motorway speed, usually on the rear axle where the driver has least warning and least control.
There is a paperwork dimension as well. An MOT tester is required to check that tyres are of a suitable load and speed rating for the vehicle, and an underrated tyre is a failure item rather than an advisory. Beyond the MOT, if a van is involved in a collision and the tyres are found to be below the specified rating, an insurer has a straightforward argument that the vehicle was not roadworthy. The correct commercial tyre costs a little more and removes the entire question.
Pressures, Loads and the Placard Nobody Reads
Car drivers are used to a single number. Most family hatchbacks run somewhere in the low thirties psi front and rear. Vans do not work like that. A loaded panel van commonly requires pressures in the fifties or sixties of psi, and the front and rear figures are frequently different from each other by a substantial margin, because the rear axle carries the payload and the front carries the engine and the driver.
On top of that, most van placards list two sets of figures: one for the van running empty or lightly loaded, and one for the van at or near full payload. This is the part that gets ignored. A courier who sets the rear tyres to the laden figure and then runs the van empty for the return leg is riding on overinflated tyres, which wears the centre of the tread, reduces the contact patch, and makes the back of the van skittish on a wet roundabout. A driver who does the opposite, running a fully loaded van on pressures set for an empty one, is generating heat in an already heavily loaded casing. Underinflation is by far the more dangerous of the two errors, and it is the one that ends in a blowout.
The placard is usually inside the driver door aperture, on the B-pillar or the door edge. It lists the size, the load and speed index, and the pressures for each condition. A three and a half tonne van with a full payload can have well over a tonne bearing on the corner being lifted, which is beyond the safe working load of the scissor jack supplied with many light commercials and far beyond a typical car trolley jack. The second issue is where to put the jack. Van jacking points are not in the same places as car jacking points, and on many models they are specified differently depending on whether the van is loaded. Some manufacturers designate a reinforced pad under the sill, some specify the rear axle beam or the leaf spring mount, and putting a jack head on an unreinforced section of a long wheelbase floor will fold the metal rather than lift the vehicle. On chassis cab and Luton bodies, the correct point may be on the chassis rail itself, well inboard of where a car driver would instinctively look.
The third issue is the load. A van full of loose stock, scaffold, glass, or racking that is not strapped can shift the moment the vehicle tilts, and a shifting load on a jacked vehicle is how people get hurt. No Spare Wheel, a Sealant Can, and a Blown Sidewall
Many vans built in the last decade leave the factory with no spare wheel. In its place there is a canister of sealant and a small compressor. Manufacturers do this to save weight and to free up load space, and for a small nail in the middle of the tread it works well enough to get a driver to a fitter.
It does nothing at all for the failures that actually strand vans. A sealant kit cannot seal a sidewall cut from a kerb strike or a piece of debris. It cannot seal a shoulder split. It cannot do anything for a tyre that has already been run flat for half a mile, by which point the inner liner has been shredded and the casing is scrap. It also cannot address a wheel that has been damaged in the same event. In every one of those cases the van needs a replacement tyre physically fitted to the rim, and if there is no spare on board, that means either a mobile fitter or a recovery truck.
There is a second problem drivers rarely think about. The compound coats the inside of the casing and, on vehicles with direct tyre pressure monitoring, it coats the sensor mounted on the valve. Some sealants are described as sensor safe and some are not. Refitting order matters too. The inner wheel goes back first, seated square on the hub, then the outer, and the nuts are brought up in a star pattern to the figure specified for that stud size before a final check. Overtightening on a dually is not a cosmetic problem: it distorts the wheel faces, and distorted faces do not clamp evenly, which is how studs shear.
