Gearbox Failure Recovery
On Every UK Motorway
Our gearbox failure recovery service handles vehicles that have suffered manual or automatic gearbox failures, including stuck in gear, inability to select gears, gearbox noise, and complete transmission seizure. We use flatbed recovery to prevent further transmission damage during transport.

About Our Gearbox Failure Recovery Service
Gearbox failure can manifest in various ways, from difficulty selecting gears and unusual grinding or whining noises to a complete inability to engage any gear at all. Whether you drive a manual or automatic, a gearbox failure will typically leave you unable to continue your journey safely. Our gearbox failure recovery service provides rapid attendance and careful handling to ensure your vehicle reaches a repair facility without suffering additional transmission damage.
For manual gearbox failures, common symptoms include gears crunching during selection, the gear lever refusing to move into certain positions, the vehicle jumping out of gear while driving, and complete loss of all gears. These can be caused by worn synchromesh rings, damaged selector forks, a failing clutch, or internal gear damage. For automatic transmissions, symptoms include harsh or delayed gear changes, the transmission staying in one gear, the vehicle not moving despite the engine running, and the transmission warning light illuminating. Causes range from low fluid levels and failed solenoids to internal clutch pack failure and torque converter faults.
Regardless of the type of gearbox or the nature of the failure, we always use flatbed recovery for gearbox-related breakdowns. Towing a vehicle with a gearbox fault using wheels-down methods can cause catastrophic damage to the transmission, turning a repairable fault into a write-off. Our flatbed transporters eliminate this risk entirely, carrying your vehicle safely to a gearbox specialist or your preferred garage. Our technicians will carry out a basic diagnosis at the roadside to help you understand the likely fault and its severity, which can be useful when discussing the repair with the receiving garage. We can also recommend specialist gearbox repairers in your area who may be able to rebuild your existing gearbox rather than replacing it, which can save significant cost.

What's Involved in Gearbox Failure Recovery
A manual gearbox in good health selects gears cleanly, holds them securely under load, and produces no abnormal noise in any gear. When the synchromesh rings that allow smooth gear engagement begin to wear, the driver notices resistance and crunch on the affected ratio, most commonly second or third gear because these are used most frequently. More advanced gearbox wear manifests as the lever jumping out of a gear under load, a sign that the selector fork or detent mechanism has worn beyond its tolerance. Complete inability to select any gear, where the lever moves freely but does not engage anything, indicates a broken selector shaft or a failed shift linkage. In some cases this can be traced to a failed gearbox mount, which allows the gearbox to move under load far enough for the linkage to disengage.
Automatic transmissions present a different set of symptoms. Harsh, delayed, or slipping gear changes point towards solenoid faults, low or degraded transmission fluid, or wear in the clutch packs inside the gearbox body. A transmission that stays in one gear regardless of throttle or selector position may be in limp-home mode, triggered by the gearbox control module detecting an out-of-range sensor reading. A vehicle that moves normally in one direction but not the other, or that creeps forward in neutral, often has a failed selector valve or torque converter issue. Dual-clutch transmissions add complexity: the two clutch packs within the unit can wear unevenly and produce shudder at low speed alongside reluctance to engage first gear smoothly.
Regardless of the type of failure, the vehicle is always transported on a flatbed. On an automatic, towing with the driven wheels on the ground without the engine running means the transmission's oil pump, which relies on the engine to turn it, is not circulating fluid, and the internal clutch packs, bands, and bearings run dry and overheat within a short distance. On a manual with a seized or partially locked gearbox, a tow rope or A-frame puts the entire load through a compromised transmission and can lock a wheel unexpectedly. Our technician provides an honest roadside assessment of the likely fault before the vehicle is transported, so the receiving garage has useful context and the owner can make an informed decision about repair versus replacement.

What Our Customers Say
“Broke down at 11pm on the M25 near the Wisley interchange. Called these guys and they had a recovery truck with me in under 40 minutes. Professional, friendly, and the price was exactly what they quoted on the phone. Genuinely saved my night.”
“Ran out of diesel like an idiot between Luton and Milton Keynes on the M1. Pulled onto the hard shoulder near Junction 10 and called them. They delivered 10 litres of diesel within the hour and even checked my tyre pressures while they were there. No judgement, just helpful.”
“My van broke down fully loaded heading north on the M6 past Stoke. Other companies quoted ridiculous prices or said they could not do it until morning. These guys came out at 2am with a flatbed and sorted everything. Will not use anyone else.”
