Recovering an electric vehicle demands a fundamentally different approach to a conventional car breakdown. The most critical rule is that EVs and plug-in hybrids must never be towed with their driven wheels on the ground. Doing so forces the electric motor to rotate freely, generating back-EMF that can overwhelm the inverter and cause irreversible damage to the battery management system. Every EV we attend goes onto a flatbed, no exceptions. Our operators carry insulated PPE, including gloves rated to 1,000 volts, and are trained to identify the difference between a routine charge depletion and a more serious battery thermal event before they begin loading the vehicle.

The most common reason an EV ends up stranded is range anxiety that has become reality, the charge ran lower than expected, perhaps on a longer motorway run or in cold weather that reduces battery capacity. We can transport your vehicle to the nearest compatible rapid charger or directly to your home address. For plug-in hybrids, the internal combustion engine may still be running but a fault in the high-voltage system still requires flatbed handling; our operators understand the split architecture of these vehicles and approach them accordingly.

Fault-related EV recoveries are more technically involved. A battery warning light, a contactor fault, or a thermal runaway warning requires our operators to follow strict isolation procedures before the vehicle is moved. We carry the documentation and access codes for the most common EV platforms so we can put the car into transport mode where the touchscreen is unresponsive. All of this is handled calmly and methodically, because rushing around a damaged high-voltage battery is not something a competent recovery operator ever does.
