About Our Brake Failure Assistance Service

Brake failure is one of the most frightening experiences a driver can face. Whether it is a total loss of braking, a soft or spongy pedal, grinding noises, or the vehicle pulling to one side under braking, any brake fault is a serious safety concern that requires immediate professional attention. Our brake failure assistance service treats every brake-related call as a high priority.

If you experience brake failure while driving, the immediate priorities are to avoid panic, use engine braking by downshifting through the gears, apply the handbrake gently and progressively, and steer to a safe stopping place away from other traffic. Once stopped, do not attempt to drive the vehicle further. Call us immediately, and we will dispatch a technician as a priority.

Our technicians carry a range of brake system components and tools including brake fluid, bleed kits, brake hoses, pads, and callipers for common vehicle models. On arrival, they will carry out a thorough inspection of the braking system to identify the cause of the failure. Common causes include brake fluid leaks from corroded or damaged lines, seized callipers that cause uneven braking, worn-out brake pads that have exceeded their safe limit, and ABS sensor faults that trigger warning lights and affect brake modulation. For some faults, a roadside repair is possible and safe. For example, a brake fluid top-up and bleed may restore pedal pressure if the fluid has leaked slowly and air has entered the system. A seized calliper can sometimes be freed and the brake rebalanced for a careful drive to a garage. However, many brake faults require workshop attention, and we will always err on the side of caution when it comes to safety-critical components. If we have any doubt about the safety of a roadside repair, we will recover the vehicle on our flatbed to a brake specialist.

What's Involved in Brake Failure Assistance

A sudden loss of brake pedal pressure, or a pedal that slowly sinks to the floor under sustained application, typically means the hydraulic circuit has lost fluid. This can happen through a failed rubber brake hose that has swollen and blocked internally, a corroded steel line that has fractured, or a brake calliper or wheel cylinder seal that has failed and is passing fluid past the piston. In each case, the circuit loses pressure and the brakes become ineffective. The driver's immediate priority is to use engine braking by downshifting progressively through the gears, apply the handbrake in short, firm pulses rather than yanking it sharply, and steer to the nearside as soon as it is safe. The vehicle must not be driven further once stopped.

On arrival, the technician carries out a systematic inspection of the entire hydraulic circuit. Brake fluid level in the reservoir gives the first indication of whether fluid loss has occurred. If the level is very low, the technician traces the circuit looking for the source: wet marks on the inner face of each wheel, a weeping flexible hose, or a damp patch on the inside of a front strut are all common locations. Brake fluid is also hygroscopic, it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere over time, which lowers its boiling point and makes it susceptible to vapour lock under heavy braking. This is an insidious failure mode because the brakes may feel normal until a long downhill run heats the callipers enough for the degraded fluid to boil. Testing the fluid's moisture content with a brake fluid tester is part of the roadside assessment.

Some brake faults can be addressed at the roadside: a brake fluid top-up and circuit bleed can restore pedal feel where the fluid loss has been slow and no air has entered deeply into the calliper. Seized callipers, which cause the vehicle to pull sharply under braking and generate intense heat at one corner, can sometimes be freed and the pad replaced. However, brakes are the single most safety-critical system on the vehicle, and any repair that leaves the technician less than fully confident in the result means the vehicle goes on the flatbed. A brake repair done incorrectly at the roadside is not a calculated compromise, it is a risk to everyone on the road.

Brake Failure Assistance FAQ

What should I do if my brakes fail while driving?
Stay calm, take your foot off the accelerator, downshift through the gears to use engine braking, apply the handbrake gently and progressively, and steer to a safe place to stop. Do not turn off the engine as you will lose power steering and brake assistance.
Can you fix brakes at the roadside?
Minor brake issues can sometimes be resolved at the roadside, but brakes are safety-critical components and we will not carry out repairs that we are not fully confident will be safe. If in doubt, we always recommend recovery to a brake specialist.
Why is my brake warning light on?
The brake warning light can indicate low brake fluid, worn brake pads, an ABS fault, or a problem with the electronic braking system. Any brake warning light should be investigated as soon as possible. Do not drive if you suspect a serious brake fault.
My brakes are making a grinding noise, is it safe to drive to a garage?
Grinding usually means the brake pads are completely worn and metal is contacting metal. You can drive very slowly and carefully to a nearby garage, but if the braking feels seriously compromised, stop and call us for recovery.
Can you replace brake pads at the roadside?
In some cases, yes. Our technicians carry pads for common vehicles and can fit them if the discs are in serviceable condition. However, if the discs are scored or warped, a proper workshop repair is needed.
My electronic parking brake will not release, what can you do?
Electronic parking brake faults are increasingly common. Our technician can attempt a diagnostic reset using OBD equipment. If that does not work, we use go-jacks and dollies to load the vehicle for flatbed recovery to a garage.
Can brake fluid really degrade over time?
Yes, brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air. Over time this lowers its boiling point and can cause brake fade or complete failure under heavy braking. Most manufacturers recommend changing it every two years.

What Our Customers Say

Broke down at 11pm on the M25 near the Wisley interchange. Called these guys and they had a recovery truck with me in under 40 minutes. Professional, friendly, and the price was exactly what they quoted on the phone. Genuinely saved my night.

Ran out of diesel like an idiot between Luton and Milton Keynes on the M1. Pulled onto the hard shoulder near Junction 10 and called them. They delivered 10 litres of diesel within the hour and even checked my tyre pressures while they were there. No judgement, just helpful.

My van broke down fully loaded heading north on the M6 past Stoke. Other companies quoted ridiculous prices or said they could not do it until morning. These guys came out at 2am with a flatbed and sorted everything. Will not use anyone else.
