Alternator Failure
On Every UK Motorway
Our alternator failure service responds to vehicles with charging system faults, including failed alternators, broken drive belts, and wiring issues. Our technicians can diagnose the fault, fit a replacement drive belt if that is the cause, and provide recovery to a garage for alternator replacement if needed.

About Our Alternator Failure Service
The alternator is the component that charges your vehicle's battery while the engine is running. When it fails, the battery is no longer being replenished, and once the stored charge runs out, the vehicle will stop completely. Warning signs include the battery warning light on the dashboard, dimming headlights, electrical accessories losing power, and eventually the engine cutting out as the ignition system loses power.
Our technicians are trained to diagnose charging system faults quickly and accurately. Using a multimeter and diagnostic equipment, they can determine whether the alternator itself has failed, whether the drive belt that turns the alternator has snapped or slipped, whether the voltage regulator is faulty, or whether there is a wiring issue between the alternator and battery. The diagnosis determines the appropriate course of action.
If the problem is a broken or worn drive belt, this can often be replaced at the roadside. Our technicians carry a selection of common drive belts and the tools needed to fit them. A drive belt replacement typically takes 15 to 30 minutes and gets you back on the road immediately. If the alternator itself has failed, this is a more involved repair that typically requires workshop facilities. In this case, our technician may be able to charge or jump start the battery to give you enough power to reach a nearby garage under your own power, or we will provide flatbed recovery to your chosen repair facility. We advise against driving long distances on battery power alone, as once the charge runs out, the vehicle will stop without warning, potentially in a dangerous location. Our alternator failure service is available around the clock and covers all vehicle makes and models.

What Is Included
What's Involved in Alternator Failure
The battery warning light on a modern vehicle does not mean the battery has failed, it means the charging circuit is not maintaining voltage above approximately 13.5 volts, which is the minimum needed to charge the battery while the engine runs. The most common cause is a failed alternator, but the technician eliminates the simpler possibilities first. A snapped or loose auxiliary drive belt is checked immediately: if the belt that drives the alternator has parted, the charge light will illuminate, the battery will begin to drain, and on many engines the water pump will also stop, meaning an overheating fault follows within minutes. Drive belt condition is visible without tools and replacement is a straightforward roadside job in the majority of cases.
If the belt is intact, the technician uses a multimeter to test the voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running. A healthy charging system produces between 13.8 and 14.4 volts at idle. A reading at or below battery voltage confirms the alternator is not charging. Further checks establish whether the fault lies in the alternator brushes and voltage regulator, which fail gradually and sometimes produce intermittent charging, or in the alternator's internal diode pack, which tends to produce a characteristic high-pitched whine from the alternator alongside the charge light. Wiring faults between the alternator and the battery, including a corroded or loose battery earth lead, can also cause a no-charge condition and are inspected as part of the same diagnostic sequence.
Alternator replacement itself usually requires workshop facilities on modern vehicles: the unit is typically mounted low in the engine bay, requires the auxiliary belt to be removed, and on some vehicles access requires partial removal of ancillary components. The technician can charge the battery using a portable charger to give the driver some residual capacity, but driving on a flat or partially charged battery with a dead alternator is unreliable, once charge runs out, the ignition system loses power and the engine stops without warning, potentially in a dangerous position. Flatbed recovery to a garage is the safe choice when the alternator itself has failed, avoiding a second breakdown on a live road.

What Our Customers Say
“Broke down at 11pm on the M25 near the Wisley interchange. Called these guys and they had a recovery truck with me in under 40 minutes. Professional, friendly, and the price was exactly what they quoted on the phone. Genuinely saved my night.”
“Ran out of diesel like an idiot between Luton and Milton Keynes on the M1. Pulled onto the hard shoulder near Junction 10 and called them. They delivered 10 litres of diesel within the hour and even checked my tyre pressures while they were there. No judgement, just helpful.”
“My van broke down fully loaded heading north on the M6 past Stoke. Other companies quoted ridiculous prices or said they could not do it until morning. These guys came out at 2am with a flatbed and sorted everything. Will not use anyone else.”
