Breakdown Cover vs Pay As You Go: Which Is Right for You?
No annual fee, no membership and no waiting period: a straight comparison of paying per call-out against buying a policy you may never use.
Need Recovery Right Now?
Get somewhere safe, then call. We confirm a fixed price on the phone before a truck is dispatched, so you know the cost before you commit.
Tap to call, 24/7 07960 200 253WhatsApp UsEvery driver in the country makes this decision, usually without thinking about it. You either pay a premium every year for annual breakdown cover you hope never to use, or you pay nothing until the day something actually goes wrong and then pay for that one job. Neither answer is automatically right. Which one leaves you better off depends on how many miles you cover, how old and how reliable your vehicle is, how many times you have genuinely needed a recovery truck in the past few years, and whether you would rather have a fixed annual cost or a variable one.
What we do is the second option. There is no membership, no annual fee, no renewal letter and no policy document. You call when you need help, we confirm a fixed price on the phone before a truck is dispatched, and you pay for that call-out only. The starting prices are published rather than invented on the day: from £100 for a battery jump start, from £150 for towing, from £190 for a mobile tyre change. There is no surcharge for nights, weekends or bank holidays, and typical response is 30 to 60 minutes.
This page is meant to help you decide rather than sell you something. That means being straight about the cases where an annual policy is the better buy, because there are several and they are not marginal. It also means being clear about the one situation where paying per use is not merely competitive but the only realistic option: when you have already broken down. A policy bought while your car is stationary on a hard shoulder will not usually cover the breakdown you are sitting in.
Our Published Prices
Every figure below is a starting price, confirmed on the phone before we set off. There is no surcharge for nights, weekends or bank holidays.
| Service | Price | What that covers |
|---|---|---|
| Battery jump start | From £100 | Includes a check that the battery is holding charge |
| Emergency fuel delivery | From £95 + fuel | The fuel itself is charged on top at cost |
| Vehicle towing | From £150 | To a destination of your choice |
| Mobile tyre change | From £190 | Common sizes carried, rare sizes quoted separately |
| Empty van recovery | From £190 | Transit-sized and smaller, up to 3.5t |
| Commercial tyre fitting | From £250 | Van, caravan, minibus and HGV tyres |
| Accident recovery | From £250 | Winch recovery and transport for damaged vehicles |
| Loaded van recovery | From £300 | Includes a load security assessment |
| 4 wheel lock recovery | From £350 | Specialist flatbed loading to protect the drivetrain |
HGV recovery is quoted individually, because the equipment required varies far more than it does for a car or van. Tolls are charged at cost where they apply.
Nothing to pay until something goes wrong
There is no annual fee, no membership and no renewal. If your vehicle does not break down this year, this service costs you nothing at all. Money changes hands only on the day you need a truck, for the job you actually needed doing.
The price is agreed before a truck moves
Once we know the vehicle, the location and the problem, the controller confirms a fixed figure on the phone. You decide whether to go ahead knowing the number rather than finding it out afterwards. Starting prices are published openly.
No waiting period, so it works today
A policy bought while you are already stopped on a hard shoulder will not usually respond to that breakdown. Pay per use has nothing to activate and no eligibility period to sit through, which is why it works once you have already broken down.
The same price at 3am on a bank holiday
There is no surcharge for nights, weekends or bank holidays. The figure quoted at two in the morning on Boxing Day is the same as the one quoted on a Tuesday lunchtime, which removes one unknown from an evening that has enough of them.
Tied to the job, not to a person
The price covers the vehicle in front of the technician, so it does not matter whether it is yours, a company van, a hire car or something you bought yesterday. There is no cover to check and no named driver to match.
Typical response of 30 to 60 minutes
Once the price is agreed, the nearest available truck is sent. Typical response is 30 to 60 minutes, depending on where you are, what the traffic is doing and how far the recovery vehicle has to travel.
How Paying Per Use Actually Works
There is no sign-up and no paperwork in advance. You call when something has gone wrong, the controller establishes where you are and what has happened, and a fixed price is confirmed on the phone before a truck is dispatched. You pay for that single job, and the arrangement ends there until the next time you need us.
The published starting prices are the honest basis for any comparison, and the full list is set out above. The common motorway jobs are a battery jump start from £100, emergency fuel delivery from £95 plus the cost of the fuel, towing from £150 and a mobile tyre change from £190. Vans are priced separately, and HGV work is quoted individually rather than from a fixed figure.
These are starting prices, so distance, the vehicle and the difficulty of the recovery can move the final figure, which is why it is confirmed before dispatch. What does not move it is the clock: there is no night, weekend or bank holiday surcharge.
The Arithmetic Nobody Does Until They Need To
The comparison is simpler than it looks. Take what an annual policy actually costs you across a full year, including any renewal increase and any add-ons, and set it against the from-price of the call-out you are most likely to need. A jump start from £100 and a tow from £150 are the two most common motorway jobs, so those are the fairest figures to test a premium against.
Then ask the question that decides it: how many times have you genuinely needed a recovery operator in the past five years? If the answer is once, twice or never, you have been paying a premium every year to insure against something that happened once, and paying per use would very likely have cost you less across the same period. Count the years, not the feeling that you might need it.
If your answer is two or three times a year, the arithmetic flips decisively, and that is not something we can argue our way around. Do the sum with your own premium and your own history.
When an Annual Membership Is the Better Choice
An annual membership is genuinely the better buy for a lot of drivers, and pretending otherwise would not help you decide anything.
If you break down several times a year, a policy will usually work out cheaper than paying for each call-out separately. That is the clearest case of all. It tends to apply to very high mileage drivers who live on the motorway network, and to anyone running an older vehicle, or one with a known fault they have not yet had the money to fix, where several call-outs a year is a realistic expectation rather than bad luck.
There is also a budgeting argument that has nothing to do with the total. Some people would rather pay one known figure once a year than face an unpredictable bill on an already bad day, and that is a legitimate preference. A fixed annual cost is simply easier to plan around.
A membership policy can also include things a per-use recovery service does not. Onward travel, home start, a hire vehicle while yours is repaired, European cover and cover that follows the driver rather than a single vehicle are real benefits, and if you value them, buy them. What we provide is the recovery itself, priced up front. If your situation calls for the wider package, an annual policy is the right answer.
The One Case Where Pay Per Use Wins Outright
If you are reading this from a hard shoulder, the comparison is already settled. Annual cover is bought in advance, to protect against a breakdown that has not happened yet. A policy taken out while your vehicle is already stationary at the side of a motorway will not usually respond to that breakdown, because an existing fault is commonly excluded and many policies apply a waiting period. Read the terms of anything you are offered in that moment, because they vary.
Pay per use has no waiting period, because there is nothing to wait for. There is no policy to activate and no eligibility to establish. You call, the price is confirmed, and a truck is sent. That is the reason a per-use service exists: somebody has to help the driver who never bought cover, and the driver whose cover does not stretch to this job.
Deciding From the Roadside, Safely
None of this matters until you are safe. On a motorway, get the vehicle as far left as you can, leave through the nearside doors, and get everyone behind the barrier, away from the carriageway. If anyone is hurt, or the vehicle has stopped in a live lane, call 999 first and let the money question wait.
Once you are behind the barrier you have time to decide sensibly. If you hold a policy that covers this, use it. If you do not, or it will not stretch to this vehicle or this job, call and get a fixed price rather than guessing at what recovery costs.
Side by Side
| Factor | Pay per use | Annual cover |
|---|---|---|
| Cost in a year when nothing goes wrong | Nothing at all. You pay only on the day you call. | The full premium, whether the policy is used or not. |
| Cost of a single call-out | From £100 for a jump start, from £150 for a tow, agreed before dispatch. | Normally covered by the premium already paid. |
| Use when you have already broken down | Yes. No waiting period and nothing to activate first. | Generally not. An existing fault is commonly excluded. |
| Nights, weekends and bank holidays | Same price. No surcharge at any hour or on any date. | Usually included, subject to the terms of the policy. |
| Extras such as onward travel or home start | Not included. We recover the vehicle and that is the service. | Often available, depending on the level of policy chosen. |
| One call-out every few years | Usually cheaper across that period, because you pay for one job only. | Several premiums paid to cover a single call-out. |
| Several call-outs a year | Costs mount with every separate job. | Usually cheaper, and far easier to budget for. |
